GMA should now resign

It's time to go Ate Glo.

Out of delicadeza (propriety), Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo should now resign.

Calls for her resignation sparked as early as 2005 when the Hello Garci scandal broke out. At the height of the 2004 elections, GMA called former Comelec Commissioner Virgilio Garcilano and asked for assurance from Garci that she will still lead by a million votes over Fernando Poe Jr., her nearest rival.

Many reasons have been cited to justify the call for her ouster and with the recent events; I find two more reasons for her to step down from the office she dubiously assumed.

One, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo does not have the resolve and political will to solve the Ampatuan massacre, a carnage that claimed 57 lives, more than half of them are journalists. The news broke out on November 23 yet it took the government three days before they were able to arrest a suspect.

Even the procedures of arresting primary suspect Andal Ampatuan Jr. breached protocols. The suspect was not handcuffed and Malacañang was very careful in issuing statements. One of GMA’s mouthpieces even categorically stated that GMA will not cut her ties with the Ampatuans.

How can you have an impartial investigation if you are partial to the accused?

Two, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is already a candidate for next year’s elections. Being a candidate, she can take advantage of her office and divert government funds to fuel her campaign as what happened with Joc-joc Bolante’s fertilizer scam. The candidacy itself is already a hindrance in providing an efficient government (which she rarely showed).

How can you be a president and at the same time a congressional candidate without compromising the welfare of the people to your political ambitions?

Tell me, Gloria, how.
